Pasi Hyyppä, Head of Building Services Engineering

What does your job involve?

I work in the Southern Finland region and head the building services engineering team. The team consists of eight experts in heating, water, ventilation and electrical systems for properties. Our team is responsible for ensuring the conditions of central government employees in the premises they work in. I‘m also a member of the regional management team, where we organise and develop operations.

In operational activities, we assist property managers and property maintenance when acute problems arise in technical systems maintenance. Another key objective is to reduce energy and water consumption in our properties. Over the past twenty years, we’ve been able to reduce consumption by a quarter, or more than 1% a year.

We carry out maintenance projects to upgrade building services systems and so ensure a disruption-free work environment for our clients. To meet our clients’ evolving needs, we install, among other things, space cooling systems, redundant power distribution, e-vehicle charging points and solar power systems.

In renovation and newbuild projects, we assess the client’s building technology needs right from the solution stage and guide project planning in line with our objectives by supporting the account managers. During the construction phase, we ensure our objectives are met and assist the construction project manager in achieving the qualitative goals of the project. Unlike other construction, lifecycle costs are emphasised in building technology solutions and choices, and determining them requires our experts to have extensive experience of our systems.

What opportunities does the future bring for your job?

My job gives me a ringside view of the development of building technology in buildings and their growing importance in work environments. At the moment, artificial intelligence is generating strong expectations for more efficient use of systems. I believe that experiments will enable us to produce better and more cost-effective technical solutions for our clients. Besides energy saving, there will also be a strong focus on power management, which will require energy storage and closer systems integration.

About me

I hold an MSc in electrical engineering and have built on my skills with a few university degree programmes. Senate Properties has done a great job of enabling continuous studies and at the same time networking with other experts. I’m involved in developing the electrical industry at Sähkötieto, which produces electricity information cards, and at the Illuminating Engineering Society (IES) of Finland, where we work to enhance both indoor and outdoor lighting goals.

In my free time, you’ll probably find me in central Finland, pottering about at the villa, or out on a golf course with clubs or skis.
