Progress with combating invasive alien species in Dragsvik garrison area – long-term work to safeguard biodiversity

The spread of invasive alien species is one of the most serious threats to biodiversity. Invasive alien species displace native plant and animal species, cause the loss of habitat biodiversity and reduce the habitat of pollinators, for example. The decline in pollinator numbers has a widespread impact on both the ecosystem and humans, as food production, among other things, depends on pollinators.
Combating invasive alien species requires planning and careful mapping
“Combating invasive alien species requires several years of work and follow-up. Permanent results are rarely achieved in one year. At Dragsvik, we are now focusing primarily on preventing the spread of invasive alien species, such as Himalayan balsam and Japanese knotweed,” says Reetta Leivo, Environmental Specialist at Defence Properties Finland.
Invasive alien species include lupins, goldenrod and Rosa rugosa. In addition to careful mapping, timeliness and prevention are essential factors in successfully combating them. The best time to eradicate invasive species is in spring and early summer, before plants have had time to seed.
The measures required to combat invasive alien species do not affect the normal use of the Dragsvik garrison area.

Combating invasive alien species and meadowing projects are being carried out in garrison areas across Finland
Defence Properties Finland was established in 2021 to be responsible for Finnish Defence Administration properties. The unincorporated state enterprise is part of Senate Group. Biodiversity has been highlighted as one of the focus areas of Senate Group’s sustainability work.
“This year and last, we launched several projects to promote biodiversity at state-owned sites across Finland. Through combating invasive alien species, together with meadowing, diversification of vegetation and changes in management methods, we aim to reach a carbon handprint of up to 1,000 tonnes, as well as the impact on nature,” says Timo Kanerva, Director, Sustainability, Social Responsibility and Environmental Services at Senate.
Besides the Dragsvik garrison area, invasive alien species have been eradicated in the garrison areas of Upinniemi, Parolannummi, Riihimäki and Kajaani. Upinniemi, Parolannummi and Riihimäki have also carried out meadowing projects which have resulted in the creation of meadows totalling around four hectares.
